Hello, welcome to the International Gas Union (IGU) Task Force 2 Youth Website, ItsNotMagicItsScience. This website was set up with the objective of providing a digital platform to reach out to Youths globally (aged 5 to 30 years) on the activities of the IGU during the 2009-2012 triennium of the World Gas Conference 2012.
The World Gas Conference is the most important and prestigious event held under the auspices of the IGU once every three years. It draws participation from over 5,000 top echelon leaders and specialists who would converge and exchange ideas over the direction, development, issues and challenges in the global gas industry. The IGU has decided to incorporate a Youth component in WGC 2012 for the first time.
The World Gas Conference will see a multi-national representation worldwide and such exposure will be good for networking in the Oil & Gas industry. Kuala Lumpur won the privilege to host the 25th World Gas Conference in 2012 after a successful bid made at IGU council meeting held in Tianjin, China in 2005.
The International Gas Union (IGU) is a non-government, non-profit organization consisting of world gas producers and gas consumers, registered in Switzerland with its secretariat located in Oslo, Norway. IGU was established in 1931 to promote technical and economic progress of the gas industry. To date, the organisation has 75 Charter members and 34 Associate members consisting of national gas associations, oil and gas companies and gas distribution companies.
In line with the global gas industry’s objective to address the global talent crunch and building strategic human capital, two task force projects were undertaken during the WGC 2012 triennium. Task Force 1 (TF1) focuses on issues around the attraction and retention of talent in the gas industry. Task Force 2 (TF2) focuses on developing a comprehensive approach to nurture the future generations interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education to ensure a consistent inflow of talent into the gas industry in the longer term.
Under Task Force 2, a key objective was to engage with the future generations (age group 5 to 30 years) in order to nurture their interest in STEM subjects and their enthusiasm in STEM education. In the longer term, it is hoped that the global gas industry will have a steady pipeline of potential candidates who are interested in science and technology from which, hopefully, some will consider the energy sector as their career choice.
The website is a digital platform to converge Youths (students and young professionals) who are interested in subject matters relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Innovation, Environment and the Energy Industry but with a specific focus on the natural gas industry.
The ultimate aim is to create better awareness of the importance of scientific innovation in making Earth a better place to live in and the role of natural gas as a fuel in improving the quality of lives of people around the world.
